Translation

I asked my my 6 year old niece one day to draw some pictures of animals and creatures she would like to see as sculptures. In short order, she provided me with a stack of renderings and I began a process of translating her marks to in Zbrush. The project will continue into the future provided she continues to draw. This project has provided us both with a unique education in art, and understanding. The digital sculptures can be 3D printing, molded and cast into any material, and I hope it will provide a sense of document of our time in quarantine amid the Covid 19 pandemic where there was something to connect and be excited about.  My goal of this project was to defer the origination of art to her, where my role would be simply to facilitate her wishes. ​

Formal deduction

I started this project with a maquette made by direct casting to get a representation of the void within an egg carton.  As a shape I wasn't sure what to do but I liked its formal qualities and the inversion of void to solid form. Although there are practical reasons in the design structure of an egg carton, by transforming it, all these features take on new codification and significance as an art object. modeling in Zbrush I recreated the maquette and created a void where the egg should be. By using deforming tools in the program I found many new shapes which seemed to imply a new possible use or function, and some took on the appeal sculptural form.
